About Our Speaker

Professor Bruce A. MarkellProfessor Bruce A. Markell is the Doris S. and Theodore B. Lee Professor of Law at the William S. Boyd School of Law, University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He has taught and written in the areas of bankruptcy, contracts and commercial law. He is a member of the Collier on Bankruptcy Board of Editors, a contributing editor to the Collier Bankruptcy Manual, and is the author of several chapters in Collier on Bankruptcy.

After practicing for nine years in the areas of bankruptcy and commercial law he joined academia in 1990, teaching at Indiana University, Emory University and as the Bruce W. Nichols Visiting Professor of Law at Harvard Law School. He is currently “Of Counsel” to Stutman, Treister & Glatt in Los Angeles.

Professor Markell is a conferee of the National Bankruptcy Conference (where he also serves as Vice-Chair of their Legislation Committe), a member of the American Law Institute, a fellow of the American College of Bankruptcy and a member of the International Insolvency Institute. He has advised the Government of Indonesia on the reform of their bankruptcy and secured transactions laws, and written and given in China on China’s bankruptcy law. He also served as an official observer for the International Bar Association to the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) with respect to its model law on international receivables financing law.

Lawrence P. King Award for Excellence in Bankruptcy

The Commercial Law League of America announced that July 15, 2003 will be the deadline for submission of nominations for the 2003 Lawrence P. King Award for Excellence in Bankruptcy. The King Award is given annually to an individual who exemplifies the standards set by the late New York University Law School professor.

The award is given to the lawyer, judge, teacher or legislator who exemplifies the best in scholarship, advocacy, judicial administration or legislative activities in the field of bankruptcy. “The recipient will have made a lasting contribution to the improvement of commerce and to the fair and ethical treatment of debtors, creditors, and the public at large,” said Judy Miller, of the Southfield, Michigan law firm of Raymond & Prokop, PC who currently serves as Chair of the CLLA’s Bankruptcy Section

“This award recognizes a career, not an event,” added John P. Wanderer of Wanderer Law Firm of Las Vegas, Nevada, President of the Commercial Law League of America.

The plaque signifying the Award will be presented at the CLLA’s Annual New York Conference in November 2003. The name of the recipient will be announced at the CLLA’s annual education program presented in conjunction with the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges held in October. The award was presented to Professor Elizabeth Warren of Harvard Law School in 2002.
